![]() Luckily material such as I Threw A Brick Through A Window and the title track, bolstered by Steve Lilywhite's production, was still in a class of its own. The title track to U2s second album, October shares its name with the month the album was released, which served as symbolism for Bonos lyric. It was all fuel to the fire of detractors who objected to such bare-faced sanctimoniousness. The album's only hit, Gloria, even came complete with a Latin liturgical chorus. U2, Irish postpunk band that by the end of the 1980s had established itself not only as one of the world’s most popular bands but also as one of its most innovative. I doubt that October can be truly pegged as die-hard 'Christian rock,' although some of it certainly can be. In the end they decided it was possible and as a result the album isn't shy with its references to rejoicing and exultation. From the powerful 'Gloria' to the delicate 'October,' all the elements of great rock are here - memorable songs and melodies, strong vocals, soaring guitars, and earnest bass and drum lines (in other words, what classic U2 is all about). ![]() As such it stands as a testament to the four-piece's tenacity, if not to their ability to judge their audience's tastes. October concerns itself in the main with things spiritual.Īll band members except Adam Clayton were avowed Christians and at this point the singer and guitarist still held doubts as to whether one could rock and get up close and personal with Jesus (hence the temporary exit). During its recording both Bono and The Edge left the band temporarily, the album's original lyrics were pilfered before recording could commence, and this while the band were still on a very limited budget. In the remastered release there have been produced amazing lives, such as i threw a brick through a window, Fire 11 o clock tick tock, i Fall Down and. October proves that even the mighty U2 were subject, long ago, to the difficult second album syndrome. ![]()

The distance they can "see you" is extended (but they still need a line-of-sight to you) and their likelihood of choosing the player over other targets is increased. The aggression level of creatures will gradually ramp up over the first 40 minutes of play. ![]() * Aggressive Creatures: The ocean creatures will become increasingly aggressive. The surface and the entire upper level of the ocean will be filled with radiation once the Aurora explodes, and the Aurora's explosion is much more powerful (go deep!) * Radiation: Speaking of radiation, there's a lot more of it, a la the Radiation Challenge mod. The early game copper-based batteries hold less power and are not rechargeable - rechargeable lithium batteries come later. ![]() Power also charges/recharges much more slowly than it did before. Exiting from the Seamoth and/or Prawn ALSO costs energy if done "at depth", except at Moon Bay and Cyclops. * Expensive Power Costs: power costs (especially for fabrication) have gone up substantially, and are further increased if you are in a radiated area. No more "love taps" from creatures and surviving a whole bunch of Reaper Bites. * Increased Damage: all damage sources will deal you substantially more damage than you have been used to. * Surface Air is Unbreathable: you can't breathe the surface air, and can now asphyxiate on the surface! A floating pump, however, will sufficiently filter the air that you can breathe from the pipes. * Life Pod Flotation Failure: your Life Pod will sink to the bottom, and will hopefully land at an extremely awkward angle! You will have to adapt to it! It will "right itself" to a more normal angle when you repair its secondary systems (but it will stay sunk). If you want to be surprised, skip the rules section below and just dive right in! (See what I did there?) Otherwise, read on and be dismayed! On any particular playthrough of a Roguelike, you're so unlikely to survive and "win" that it's actually more of a question how long can you survive before your near-inevitable death! ![]() ![]() “The Searchers” is regarded as his crowning achievement. He has directed more classic westerns than any other director, including "Stagecoach", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "My Darling Clementine","Drums Along the Mohawk", "Fort Apache", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", “How the West Was Won", and many more, earning him the title, “The Great American Director”. As with “The Searchers”, his films appear deceptively simple. Ford made the western a formidable film genre, and elevated the American West to romantic, even mythic proportions. His vision of the American frontier (with gunslingers, heroes on horseback, saloons, wide open spaces, murderous Indians, fearless cowboys, and so on) has almost singlehandedly become our vision of that era (for better and for worse). This film was masterfully orchestrated by John Ford, one of cinemas most respected and influential directors. Temporary houses and sets were built in the Navajo park for the film, and many local American Indians were used as extras. His trademark long shots capture his characters against imposing terrains and vast skies. True to Ford’s style, the gloriousness of the landscape, shown this time in Technicolor, acts like a peaceful watchdog, objectively observing the horrific human tribulations taking place upon it. Monument Valley has never looked more majestic than in “The Searchers”. Ford shot ten films in this unusual landscape, and largely because of him, its towering red sandstone buttes and otherworldly formations are recognized worldwide as the picture of the American West. “The Searchers” was shot on location in Monument Valley, a Navajo Nation’s Park on the Arizona-Utah border, which director Ford made famous with his 1939 classic western, “Stagecoach”. In its offensiveness, I do believe “The Searchers” forces the viewer to examine the boundaries of one’s own prejudices.Ī key element separating "The Searchers" from other films is its visual magnificence, in particular its use of framing, composition, and the majestic landscape on which it was filmed. I wrote more on that topic in my “Gone With the Wind” post. One must keep in mind that like all films, this was a product of its time. ![]() My take on that scene is that it is meant to show how uncontrolled prejudice can turn evil. The film depicts Indians as ruthless savages, and white men as victims, and is highly disrespectful towards American Indians and their culture - particularly in the scene where “Ethan” disrupts the grave of a dead Indian. Be forewarned: as with many westerns, "The Searchers" is racist. “The Searchers” is based on a 1954 Alan Le May book by the same name, which was in turn loosely based on real events. This film is not a psychological study, yet it seduces the viewer into pondering many topics. We never really get inside “Ethan’s” head, but his actions present a very complicated portrait of what seems like a man subconsciously grappling with his racism. ![]() Sometime after their search begins, “Ethan’s” goal changes, and questions of how far one is willing to take their hatred arise. Joining him is his adopted nephew, “Martin Pawley” played by Jeffrey Hunter, who is sensitive, caring, and part native Indian. At the center is “Ethan Edwards” played by John Wayne, a white, hot-headed, exceedingly racist, tough guy. Where “The Searchers” gets complicated is in the details. The story is simple: In 1868 during the Texas-Indian wars, two men begin a search for two girls (one's nieces and the other's sisters) who were abducted by Indians. Directed by the father of westerns, John Ford, and starring cinema’s top western star, John Wayne, “The Searchers” is electrifying in every way. Ranked by AFI as the #1 western of all-time, the #12th greatest film of all-time, it has been noted as having influenced film directors as diverse as Steven Spielberg, David Lean, Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, Wim Wenders, Peter Bogdanovich, Jean-Luc Godard, and George Lucas. It has been hailed as a masterpiece, and has become one of the most influential films in history. “The Searchers” somehow thoroughly satisfies as it stirs up many questions, providing few answers if any. It is a grippingly ravishing, uncomfortable journey about revenge, race, family, finding the American identity, and the effects of festering racism. Breathtaking in its grandeur and exposing a West that is both beautiful and brutal, it might seem like just another well made western, but it's actually a film of jarring contrasts, complexities, and ambiguities. In a world we often think of as black and white, “The Searchers” is all about the gray. ![]() ![]() ![]() It also supports a large number of schema-rich return types.
